Here is an example of how to set up a training session in the form of a restricted game to suit a specific opponent. eg
- This opponent does not have a drop shot, or a very effective drop shot. Immediately that tells you that most returns from the front will go to length, and any short shots will not be very well played. With this in mind, by bringing the opponent forward to the front as much as possible will set up opportunities to drive or volley to length.
The restricted game practice with your buddy would be, eg
- Play a game, lob serve, reply cross court drop shot, reply drop shot, reply drive or volley to length, boast, and play out the rally.
The important thing when setting up this training is that the series of shots must be structured so that each player is always moving to extreme parts of the court, and that the best reply option is played.
This practice builds confidence and players learn to get out of trouble under extreme pressure.
