A partner of equal ability is preferable or an experienced mentor to get a few basic tips.
A racket, see the Gear Forum for assistance in chosing a suitable type.
A ball that will bounce sufficiently for both players to be able to enjoy a rally. See the Squash Library/How to Play for assistance in choosing a ball. The wrong ball can spoil your fun.
Eyewear is recommended as the squash ball can be like a missile when struck hard, and without control, by an opponent.
Indoor court shoes with non-marking soles.
