Injured quads

I was just wondering if anyone else out there has had problems with injured quads, mine seem to strain really easily and i can't work out why (and yes i am a medical student!).  At first it thought rest would do it, tried a month off, no better, now my mind runs riot with strange things it could be in my hips or gait.  Anyone any thoughts?

Here is a paper discussing the ratio between quads v hamstrings, eg 200lbs:120/160lbs.

Honestly, I think an overall assessment would be a good thing no matter what if you can make the opportunity, there is a ratio balance between back and stomach muscles too. Hey, cost should be tax deductible as it is to assist your profession as a medical pro, oops !

Keep us informed how you go.

Rita, are you saying i should be able to lift 3 times as much with hamstrings as quads or am i misreading?  Certainly cycling improves the quads, i fear before a match i walk up the one big hill en route to avoid being too tired but the rest of the week i cycle fine, i only get problems post squash or rugby, normally after sprinting.

Drop shot, i went to a doctor and was given stretches that wouldn't tired an ould granny, they did nothing to prevent the injury so i may go back and se about physio.  The only scan that shows ligaments well is an MRI, 6 month waiting list if they even think i need it, although an x-ray may show up any bony problems.  Did get an MRI of my left knee for a study and thanks to the pre-test for that i know my knees are in good nick!

aprice - just a thought.  Physio, is a good idea for the immediate problem as dropshot suggested.  You know cyclists have the greatest looking quads you ever see in an untrained athlete.  You mention cycling to the courts, not sure how many hills are on the route.  Sounds more like a cycling strain than a squash strain?

Also, get into your text books looking at muscle balance, eg balance between hamstrings and quads (and I have it in my head that it was a ratio of 1:3); a machine/Personal Trainer at the gym at Uni might be able to put some light on this too.

then, the only hint is to see the doctor, doctor :-)

x-ray or whatever that will show your ligaments may be helpful.

Or, simply, give it a rest as you could overuse it.

Yeah, i do plenty of stretches already, whole body ankle to head, i find the creams dont do much for me as my body is generally warm as i have to walk or cycle to the courts!  Dont always warm down, i know i should but i generally hurt too much by then

I'd advice a lot of warm-up/down and stretching. If does not help, boost it with creams/ ointments.
