Of course the most obvious question is "why did they not do that this time" ?

Cheers...........

Here is the background to this story at the Saudi International.

Viper - don't sweat about it.  I have no idea of the details and am not that interested in the deal, but my gut feeling is:

  • the court was sponsored by ?   glass company
  • their products were xyz which they wanted to expose to the public
  • sponsor saw some potential in the floor for whatever reason, cost, design, publicity, usage, gimmick, whatever.
  • wanted to prove the suitability of the product for such uses, etc.
  • to pull up the floor would have not been feasible due to cost, late notice, design, whatever
  • asthetics were perfect for the stadium
  • etc etc

Yep, and it did not work out as the design persons were probably Engineers making the product strong, durable, easy install, good look, but underestimated the humidity, absorbtion moisture in its current design - so they may work on it further or change it, or ditch it.

Let's hope they trial whatever they do (exhibition match) before putting it in service for an international event.

I hand it to anyone who is prepared to think outside the square and try something different, something that might have just been the "beesknees" for the sport.

Exactly, so why on earth did they not forsee the very obvious inability for glass to absorb moisture ! incredible folly and they were very very fortunate a player did not do a serious injury, imagine Ramy or similar doing a knee.....................

Putting glass on a floor was a bold move in the first place.

These guys perspire like crazy with sweat flicking from their body, hands, legs onto the floor surface, so let's face it whatever material is used it has to be able to absorb some moisture.

That's good for the sport that glassfloor is banned. No reason for more injuries and dangerous slippages (have you seen the match of James Willstrop v. Mohamad Abbas in Saudi? - outrageous!). At the end of the day - they will find th way to put ads on the floor, but it's so much better without that glass surface behind players feet.
