Pro League Promotion Night The inaugural Pro League Promotional Night was a tremendous success. The night got underway with the Shotgun. 16 of Brisbane's finest players were randomly drawn and placed in a 16 knockout draw. It was point a rally scoring with a winner being the first to score 3 points. The bottom line is you really can't afford to make an error. Wavell's Chris Baker and Acacia Ridge's Zac Alexander started proceedings. Baker won 3-0. Scarborough's Legend Ian Freeme was too hot for Acacia Ridge's Terry Gibbons. Scarborough's Brad Freeme took care of Wavell's Josh Cox 3-1 whilst Caboolture's Nathan Stevenson made short work of UMG's Lisa Camilleri winning 3-0. UMG's Steve Finitsis drew Holland Park's Kelvin Smith it what can only be described as the best first round match. Finitsis was a close contest 3-2. HP's Steve Martin turned it on from the start to beat Caboolture's young gun Brad Beneke 3-0. UMG's Marc Forster has been undefeated all season against the number 2's but got aced by Scarborough's Andrew Pringle 3-0. In the final first round match up Jacob Lohrisch pipped UMG's Andrew Bateman 3-2. That took us to the second round where the openning contest was between Chris Baker and Ian Freeme. Baker stole the match 3-2. Brad Freeme was too good for Nathan Stevenson winning a place in the semi with a comfortable 3-1 victory. Big Steve Martin won the battle of the Steves when he upset his more fancied rival Steve Finitsis 3-2. In the final second round match Andrew Pringle began to hit top gear with a crushing 3-0 victory over Jacob Lohrisch. The first semi final was between Chris Baker and Brad Freeme but the golden run for Baker was over. Freeme won a place in the final 3-0. Steve Martin and Andrew Pringle faced off in the second semi but with crowd support chanting "Pringle Pringle" emerged the victor 3-0 to set up a final berth against best mate Brad Freeme. The all Scarborough FINAL didn't have a fairy tale ending for Mr Pringle. Brad Freeme was just too good winning 3-0. Freeme won $100 for his efforts! That would have to have been the best "rate per hour" for a Brisbane squash player in a long while! In the battle for supremacy Craig Rowland was determined to right the rankings against Steve Finitsis. Under the new professional scoring system "Nugget" was just too good winning 11-7, 11-9, 11-4 on a fairly hot sultry night. In the other matches Carl Hampson was too good for Steve Martin winning 11-4, 6-11, 11-6, 11-9. Brad Freeme won the final match up against Peter Hughes after Hughes was forced to retire injured after the 3rd game with bad blisters. The final score was 11-10 (2-0), 8-11, 8-11, 11-0, 11-0. The doubles was somewhat abandoned due to the length of the individual matches however we still managed to play two. Wavell's Josh Cox and Jacob Lohrisch were too good for Acacia Ridge's Terry Gibbons and Zac Alexander winning the best of 3 contest 15-7 15-12. The Caboolture/UMG combination of Nathan Stevenson and Marc Forster took care of Scarborough's Ian Freeme and Nathan Turnbull 15-11, 15-2. Approximately 150 spectators turned up to enjoy a GREAT night of squash. One spectator even came from just over the border in NSW. The Lightening was exciting squash entertainment and more must be done to use this concept to promote squash. Thank you to our VIS (Very Important Sponsors): Coca Cola, Pro Kennex and Head. Finally CONGRATULATIONS to Paul and Joyce Barlow from Wynnum West on hosting a terrific Night. The food was good and the set up perfect for what turned out to be a very "yellow" night. The Scarborough Support crew were simply fantastic and really got into the spirit of promoting and supporting their tribe. All supporters had to wear something yellow.
