The SHOTGUN, a round robin teams event was exciting for the audience with the Referee and Compere adding some pizazz. The idea of PARS scoring first to win 3 points kept the interest of supporters. The play was fast and furious. Colourful shirts with sponsorship markings and players names on the back was good idea too.
The individual matches with pro scoring to 11 pointsreminded me of some of the game's basic principles. While the players' fitness and physique were to be admired, it was disappointing to see aspiring young squash players kill the game and make it so boring. Many of the matches were just hit and run! Playing without tactics is hard to watch after 5 minutes and the spectators showed by starting to shuffle around and talk, never knowing the score or who was winning either.
Full marks to a former pupil, WR no 7 and Games Gold Medalist, Craig Rowland, who is not as fit as he used to be, but won in 3 because he used his brain as well as his skills. Good to watch. He outlplayed his opponent (a player unknown to me but evidently WR 150) with tactical speriority.
I would like to encourage all aspiring players to develop the complete package of skills including technical, tactical, physical and psychological. This will make training heaps more interesting and challenging. Players who base their game on fitness alone will find the change to a more complete game more enjoyable for many years to come. Give it a try .
Overall, well done to event organisers.
