Hi, any help on this question?

This guy I played tonight had a really unusual shot. Whenever I played the ball really tight along the side wall around the mid-court area or at the front, rather than getting behind the ball and trying to hit through it (he'd only really be able to hit it with the top/frame of his racket) he went at it side on with a kind of spongy boast. What I mean is the balls were so tight, his racket, the ball and the wall all seemed to be in contact at the same time - like he was squashing (no pun intended) the ball into the wall.

They'd hit the front wall, but only after spooning off the side wall at an odd angle with a load of spin. I'm no physicist, but surely these can't be 'clean' shots. I kept appealing to the marker but all he would say is 'the ball was good', which was incredibly frustrating.

Any thoughts?

Well it is technically possible to make contact with the ball whilst it's stuck to the wall and to hit a boast off the top of the frame with one, non-pushed or scooped shot.

I've hit them myself and they "feel" clean, sound clean, so I guess they must be clean hits. It's frustrating to come across a player who can hit shots like this, but I doubt that anyone on the planet can consistantly hit these shots in that manner without occasionally having a double-hit or a scooped shot.

Patience maybe needed and just keep putting him in the same position. If the only shot he can hit is a boast, and he's facing the wrong way, then you should have plenty of time to get into the correct position to punish him for the weak shot!

Keep grinding away and you'll soon be winning!
