In the past few days I have had two competition matches. The results could not have been more different and unexpected. Just when you think there would be a good performance, it turned out to be shocking and when a stinker was expected, the result was OK.
I have had a pretty bad case of the flu over the past couple of weeks, so when I waqs asked to fill in in the team I played for last season, I was not too keen. Especially as I spent most of that day coughing and spluttering. Turned up for Squash and could not stop coughing before the match. Last time I played Tom, played a shocker and lost in 4. I was not expecting any better this time.
To my complete surprise my performance was OK. Apart from the second game, where I lost concentration completely, I maintained a reasonable hold on the match and won quite easily. Court coverage was OK, Technique was OK, and tactically was good. After the match, my cough disappeared.
The next day I felt comparitively good, hardly coughed at all and turned up to Squash that night expecting to do OK. I had beaten Steve in our past few meetings and expected to do so again. I started rreasonably well in each game, but, half way through each, I went totally to the pack. It was the worst I had played in months. I seemed to be immobile, could not swing the racket freely and just to top it off, injured my calf half way through the match.
After the match, I could not stop coughing. Sometimes I wonder what is happening!
My misery was further confirmed when, during a coaching session, I totally ruined my calf muscle (which I thought had recovered from the minor strain). I will now have to spend at least two weeks on the sidelines.
At least it might give me a chance to do a little core strength work which I think I need at the moment. Also time to work on my "mental skills" which are also in urgent need of attention. How to add images to Members' Forum posts and replies here...
