Stumbled upon a pristine video copy of the 94 Australian Open recently.
It was great to watch the smashing Brett Martin and his sister Michele.
Who and what ever happened to this Billy Haddrell ?
Also how times have changed the Open was played in a full glass court in the middle of a city mall and it was drawing huge interest, sad to see this tournament reduced to what we have just seen in an Adelaide club court.

When you say SA do you mean Squash Australia or South Australian Squash ?
It would seem odd that a small State Association would have the resources to purchase such an expensive court, and then not have it used what's more ?
It was not used for the South Australian Open or the just finished Australian Open so when on earth would it return funds on the investment ?
Ahhh........ the penny is dropping :

Hence the sponsorship of the recent Australian Open by a Gaming Company. Wheels within wheels....

they bought the one that was used in the melbourne commonwealth games. the sa squash association is in a good financial position due to their ownership of a "club" in adelaide ("Racquets", i think)

When you say THE glass court does that suggest SA own a movable glass court ?

I cannot fathom why they cannot garner more sponsorship, in these days of "australian kids are too fat", the renewed push of "get fit for life" and how everyone complains about being time poor to excersise, squash is perfectly placed to fill all those needs, especially when the Govt is focus on the poor state of our lazy children ?
In the end the Open was stumped up by an obscure gambling company ! clearly a vice at odds with all of the above - go figure !

however, this is were looks can be deceptive. If my memory serves me correctly, that particular event cost Australia Squash tens of thousands of dollars that it did not have. the costs of promoting and staging the event, far exceeded the income gained from it and in the end did no one any real good.
this is where we get into the same old argument of the way Squash is promoted. Via high profile events or at the club level. - You know my opinion on that one!
ps. there is a strong tip that next year's event will take place on the glass court. also although it was played on a club court, it was not just any club, it is probably the best club in australia, from what i have been told.

Hi Viper,
Billy Haddrell , former Australian Junior Champion; PSA Top Ten player, Victorian Squash player. Living in Western suburbs Victoria. Great player...huge ability.
I asked him to assist me with kids one day at Moorabbin he was more than obliging. The kids were amazed at his raquet skills. Only player I have seen do 4 corner figure 8 volleys; Wall to wall volleys with power while talking to you .
There is another glass court in a factory in pieces not being used in Victoria....maybe an urban legend but it would be good to utilise if it is.
All the best
David M.
