I thought, after all the forum discussions about the players, etc the Mini Poll made me stop and reflect on the years. It was a difficult question. Yes/No, regarding the new technology - something we do not want to ever give up of course, with all the zip coming from the strings.
On the bigger picture, I guess technology also embraces more than squash rackets. What else?
- the switch from Amateur to Open status of the game, about 1975/6 I think off the top of my head.
- players exposed to national/international competition younger, eg this year is to be the 14th World Junior Mens Titles, in NZ.
- the introduction of satellite coaching programs in regions
- the establishment of the Sports Institutes.
- Scholarships to assist players make a career out of squash, and fund their travel, coaching, gym, accommodtion, etc.
- funding of sports science projects at Universities, eg the Energy Systems, Biomechanics, Video Analysis, etc.
- the establishment of professional international tournament circuits throughout the world.
- appointment of world class players into paid positions, eg Club Pro, spreading the expertise.
That actually is quite a bit I think, and it all adds up to money. No doubt others will have more to say too.
Wow, if somebody gave squashgame that sort of $$$ we would have a "BALL"
