How should you deal with recieving serve on the forehand side when it is served very straight almost on the mid court line?  I have been having problems with this recently if i don't get round to volley it very quicklysquash game squash extras How to add images to Members' Forum posts and replies here...

aprice - well, I think I would:-
  • Change the position I stand to receive serve for starters - move about in the box, and watch the server very carefully to see what they are doing with the serve. Don't just plant yourself in the receiving box is what I mean.
  • This serve is probably only happening now and then by the sound of it, so always stand around the half court line while the opponent prepares to serve, but as soon as they hit the ball move forward/across about a metre and that should deter them from hitting down the middle of the court.
  • Be sure to stand almost facing the server, or at least so you can see what they are doing squarely -  do not just peep over your shoulder at the server; and this will help you anticipate the service angle much better, and also prepare earlier.
  • While you have the opponent (the server) stuck against the wall (as they will not be able to move into the centre if the ball is down the middle), a drop shot or boast would be a good safe choice of shots - that is if you can control the ball enough to do a good shot.
Hope this helps - let us know.
