Squash as a sport is not a high profile sport and not a well paid career opportunity but what it has to offer is THE CHALLENGE. All of us have challenges in life that we need to conquer. Why should we pick squash as a sport above some of the more high profile sports? What does squash have to offer that other sports don’t? Well, here it is.
A squash player must have many attributes and this is what makes the challenge...
CHALLENGE NO 1: Are you fit enough?
As a potential top grade player you must be fit in a number of different areas.
- You must be quick around the court and be able to have lasting stamina.
- You must also be able to recover quickly as squash is an explosive sport with minimal rest periods.
CHALLENGE NO 2: Have you got hand eye coordination?
If you think you are up to this challenge then you need good hand eye coordination and reflexes.
- Your skills are the next part that you need to perfect and, as with all sports, this takes practice, practice and more practice.
- Being able to hit the ball back is good but what you really need is being able to place the ball where you want it, when you want it and at the speed you want it.
CHALLENGE NO 3: Can you think quickly?
To be the best you must be able to think quickly and readjust your game plan as required.
- If your opponent is getting tired then don’t hit it back to them, but hit it away from them.
- If your opponent is not very tall, hit it above them to get them into the back of the court area.
- If your opponent is tall and fit, then keep the ball in play and don’t hit it out or down.
Your choice of shots is what can make the difference between being an average player or being a top class player.
The real challenge is to have all three attributes and be able to use them well. If you are up to it, then take up squash, give it a go and you will see the rewards. It is great fun, great for your health and mind and you get to meet lots of new people in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
If you want to start the right way then get some professional coaching to get you off on the right foot and from there you will see the results. Most of all enjoy the challenge and have fun.
