From a "dead flat footed start" it is hard to generate the leg power immediately to take-off and, most importantly get to the ball prepared, without rushing the swing. Of course you cannot go around walking on your toes, that would be unrealistic.  However, just as the opponent is about to hit the ball that is the time to get the ball of the foot ready to propel forward movement.

Things to do that will make one get to the ball earlier:-

    • Bounce on your toes just as the opponent is about to strike the ball.

    • Watch the ball at all times to gain as many clues about the "take off" as possible, eg which direction to go.

    • Work at increasing your leg power by walking/running up steps, skipping, walking/running up steep hills.

    • Power to weight ration will also affect the speed of the take-off.
