Here is our link to the rules/spec which also has the WSF link so after you have digested what you have read come back with some more questions.
Good luck with it all.

- All rules contained in the WSF Rules link are current.
- Rules are not changed willy nilly.
- The rule amendments say "major conceptual and rule changes" and then "rewording and rearrangements" as well as some deletions which by the way are reference to the doubles rules, clothing, and guidelines to Tournament Referees (which is the subject of a separate WSF Rules and Referees Committee booklet).
"The Singles Rules for 2001 have been revised to reflect current Refereeing practices and to take into account proposals of member nations.
The general format of the previous rules has been followed.
The rules are followed by a set of Appendices which include Guidelines for the interpretation of the rules.
The Guidelines are to be read in conjunction with the rules."
The introduction to the rules also states:
"The World Squash Federation (WSF) Rules sub-committee of Graham Waters, Bruce Kettle and myself have been greatly assisted in this review by the input of a number of people. All are sincerely thanked for their time, original ideas and reviews of draft documents....signed Don Ball"
Furthermore, it is the affiliation fees of member nations, and their Referee Committees, that make these revised editions of the rules possible.

It was about hitting the ball in between games, eg games 1 and 2 (during the break), so it was not to do with the wasting time rule in this case.
- I could not specifically find a bit in the rules covering this.
- I know once it was ok to hit the ball for whatever reasons, eg keep the ball warm, practice up a bit, get rid of nervous energy, etc.. Then there was a change where it was necessary to get the permission of the opponent through the Ref. - the ball was always to remain on court and not to be taken outside. Often one player would chose to stay on court and roll the ball under their foot to keep it warm, since they were not allowed to hit it.
- The antics of players have brought about these changes over time, eg:
- one guy went up to the front wall, back to the ref and bit the ball causing a replacement ball, which then caused a break, with a new ball warmup etc. Incidentally this happened in Europe in an important tournament.
- players taking the ball to the bathroom in between games and substituting or running hot/cold water over it to change the conditions
- Like all rules, there is always someone trying to find a way around them which then puts pressure on the Rules Committee.

do you think it's against the rules? Well, if the player rests like that? ;)
